Wednesday Weigh In- Weight Watchers

Well I have jumped in and joined back up with Weight Watchers...and not just the on-line version, but the go to the meetings and be weighed version.
Laurie wanted friends to go with her to help her loose the baby weight. Megan jumped at it as did Laurie's mom Karen and I said okay I am in (Mom would have loved this and joined with us).....so Saturday morning.....yes I got up early. We signed up!  To me this whole thing is now a competition...that is the Cole/Butters coming out.... I want to be the best and loose the most, the fastest. I know that is not what it is all about, but hey what ever motivates you.
The Weekend was a mess, but Monday morning I began in earnest, really watching and tracking my points......every food has a point value (even the LaffyTaffy that kept calling my name and begging to be eaten...they are 1 pt. a piece) and you are given an allotment of points for the day.
The Tracking has never been easier since they have a whole on-line tracking and calculating app. I totally love the app. It makes this whole thing a whole lot better. I can look up in an instant food point values and decide if I want to eat it...... The whole on-line support in addition to the meetings is awesome.....https://www.weightwatchers.com/
The best thing about the WW points thing is that most fruits and veggies are free points so you can fill up on them if you are still hungry.
Today I have had a heck of a time getting my points used since I have eaten so many fruits and veggies, and I am stuffed.
I can do anything for the next 12 weeks and then I am going to re-evaluate this diet choice. I will probably keep going since it is the closest to what I do when I truly diet.
When I began for real to lose weight 5 years ago it was a good thing. Today I am 80lbs. lighter than when I began and I have kept it basically off...there have been a few 5 to 10 lb. gains but I have really kept it under control by weighing everyday, exercising and paying attention to what goes in the mouth. I have set 10lb. goals, because you can only do it a bite at a time and I didn't gain it all in one big gain so what makes me think I can loose it that way? My goal is to loose another 30 lbs. This is very doable......

Let the games begin!

Wednesday Weigh In

On the diet front it is all slow go, but I am enduring and not gaining which is a good thing. Staying the same is a really good thing. I must be looking better since everyone comments. I  hope it is the exercise that is giving me some shape. I now need the secrets of toning up old flabby skin...old is the key word, my skin is not young elastic and resilient as it once was.
Enough on that.....

Laurie sent me an interesting article about cancer, nutrition, health and attitude from John Hopkins.
here it is:
AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY... (INCLUDES GOOD PREVENTATIVE INFO)
:
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

3.. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.  To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

4. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.  Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.  An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply..

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar, it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer     cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and are harmful.  A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small    amounts.
Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.  A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food, including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

5. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

6..Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

7. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy tcancer cells.

8. No plastic containers in micro. No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer.  Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Cast le Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc.., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

I find it interesting that the core of this is the suggested health code mentioned in the Word of Wisdom. I know that it is my trying to implement these principles that has lead me to losing weight.  who knows maybe I am keeping cancer at bay as well.

September Goals

Yes, it is the 6th and I am just setting my monthly goals.  But I never feel like September begins until after Labor Day...and speaking of Labor Day, I hate it when we have to labor.....back to goals.
I mentioned the two big paint projects, actually there was one huge one and a tiny one and the tiny one is done as for the big one I am not so down with "Venezuelan Sea" now I have lived with it in a large patch for a week. I like it but it doesn't make me happy like the other colors of paint I have painted through out my house. It will be a great accent color for something....$45.00 mistake, It could have been worse. I am now leaning toward a great bright green color...surprise, not.....called Agave, you know like the cactus. It is much more me and makes me happy. I had a patch of it on the walls for a while and really liked it just not where I was testing it out.
Goals
1. Finish the big paint project. Which leads to several smaller projects: A-Reorganize & store the beauty supplies. B-Clean out the Mud Room. C-Get rid of the extra furniture in the downstairs family room. D-DI run.
2. Keep working on the diet or should I say health and fitness thing and loose 25 more pounds....I know not all of it in this month but maybe 5 to 10 permanent loss pounds by the end of the month. Meg and I walk 3 miles 5 days a week. I am slow walker but I keep doing it, yeah for me.   As for the Diet- I weigh a whole lot less than it says on my drivers license, yeah! I think the last time I weighed this much was between the birth of Meg and Nelson, that would be 22 to 26 years ago....much too long. The interesting thing with weight loss is that you may weigh less but your proportions change, or the remaining fat rearranges itself. I have two clothing Items that I have kept around as goal clothing, lets just say the items fit weird and I don't think that even with the last 25 pounds I want to loose that they will fit any better....just interesting. This is something we are trying to remind skinny minnie Laurie about, she is frustrated by her clothing size; she weighs a lot less that she ever has, but she is still wearing her former skinny size and not a size or two smaller.
3. Find a new life path...I know I have been talking about this for several months now, but I really need to get going on it. Any suggestions will be considered.
4. Get ready for the Holidays...yes, this thought is a dirty word, but I would really like to be one of those people who is done by the first week of December with the decorating, shopping, wrapping, baking, cards, etc....

Fall is a favorite so maybe that alone will be enough to spur me on.

Wednesday Weigh In

Another week another pound.......yeah!

The only problem with loosing weight is not having clothes to wear! But hey what a sacrifice....new clothes!!!!!

I must be doing something right because every time I turn around someone else is commenting on how I look and how much weight I have lost, then they ask me what I am doing to loose it? ...........it is simple, I am eating less. The Lords plan, Word of Wisdom, works the best.....moderation in all things, but more fruits, veggies and whole grains added to my diet than I ever ate before.
The most amazing thing is that it really isn't that hard to get in 5 to 7 servings of veggies and fruits. Most folks get there veggies in eating salads, but I don't particularly like lettuce salads and I am still eating a ton of veggies. And all of the veggies are making me feel full.
The other food bit that I do everyday is have a handful of raw almonds.....My Grandma Butters always had nuts around to eat and she is 93. According to most ethnic diet plans a handful of raw almonds is supposed to do wonders for your beauty and health....so almonds it is.
Exercise is also important...just keep your hear pumping and your lungs breathing deep.....I walk for 40 minutes at least 4 times a week. I also do weights for my arms and shoulders....mainly so they aren't flabby.

What ever I am doing is working. It is so exciting to be consistently loosing the weight.

Wednesday Weigh In

I am down 3 pounds. I am weighing less than I have in years. FANTASTIC!
I know I must now look like I have been loosing weight because I have had several people in the past week comment on my weigh loss. And if that were not enough, getting dressed on Sunday became quite a chore. Most of my Sunday/Dressier wardrobe is 2 sizes too big. I have a couple of dresses and skirts that fit okay, but I like variety. After changing my top 3 times I finally landed on the blouse that looked least baggy....what I problem, why am I complaining.
I'm not really complaining or trying to say ha ha look at me...I guess I am just frustrated. I have all theses really nice clothes that I can no longer wear and I feel real guilty getting rid of them. Gary suggested that I talk to one of my neighbors who understands tailoring and ask her if any of the garments are salvageable. Great plan, now how to fit it into my life.

On the diet front.....Following the Word of Wisdom as a a diet plan has me eating more whole plant based foods and less animal based foods. This past week has been a real eye opener. I feel full all the time, almost too full, I have a lot of energy, and I lost some weight. The mind change that I Incorporated this past week was, when making a choice on what to eat choose a vegetable or fruit first, followed by whole grains. Animal based foods should be the last choice, and make up 10% or less of your diet. I am really trying to avoid all processed foods...which is a challenge in this crazy world.
The biggest challenge so far with this eating style is to find menus that my family is happy eating....If mom does this every one has to participate. I think they would be happy with almost anything for dinner, but I am still very uncertain how to cook this way. We had organic brown rice with stir fry (no oil) vegetables for dinner the other night. It was great, and tasted delicious, but I don't feel like I can do this for dinner everyday.....Gary asks why not, Asian families eat that way....he has a point. I will figure this thing out. Eating this way will have long term health benefits for me and my family so it is worth it.
Interesting fact I recently read...eating a plant based diet can actually repair some of the damage done to our bodies from eating an animal food, refined diet....damage to our heart, veins, pancreas, liver etc....
I guess following the manufactures guidelines on fueling my body is the best choice.....you wouldn't give your car the wrong fuel so why do we do it to our bodies?

Diet Report

I wish I didn't have to think about dieting...that it all came naturally....alas that is not my gift.
I went to the Doctors today, he is helping me with my diet...I have other problems besides eating to much food, and doing to little activity; anyway I am down 12 pounds in a month...mostly water weight, but hey 12 lbs. is a reasonable healthy weight loss. He tells me to keep doing what I am doing, only do it better?!?!?!
I have been much better in thinking about the food I ingest....I still have my biggest failures after 5:00PM....I will eat anything on hand.
The other day I was analyzing when I eat....all the time...I eat whether or not I am hungry. Currently I can feel a lump of something in my stomach area....but I could still eat. The feeling isn't a full I've eaten a big meal feeling it is more of my stomach seems to ache a bit so maybe food would help.
...and what do I eat?
I eat what is available. I don't have particular cravings....except for the feel of diet coke carbonation in my mouth and going down my throat. I decided to cut the soda for now so that is probably the why. I also know that I like strong flavors of food. The other night Gary and I went out to eat at Market Street, they are currently doing a big Crab event. It was okay... the stuff you put with Crab isn't strong flavored so after a while it all tasted a little bland to me...The doctor says my taste is being affected by not drinking enough water....I don't like the taste of water, and yes it all has a taste to me. I know, drink more water!
Part of losing weight is knowing your body, how it feels and functions, and knowing your current eating and exercising habits so you can make and feel changes. I will keep working on it.
The good news besides the weight loss is that I am exercising more and actually liking it...maybe at some point I will want to exercise...not just enjoy it following my workout.
Off to figure out what's for dinner....and try to keep my mouth from consuming needless junk the rest of the day.
